IOTA 是為物聯網設計的分散式帳本。它是第一個實現無手續費微交易以及安全數據傳輸的帳本。具備量子抗性。IOTA 是一個突破性的全新開源分散式帳本，不使用區塊鏈。其創新的量子抗性協議稱為 Tangle，帶來了獨特的新功能，例如零手續費、無限可擴展性、快速交易、安全數據傳輸等。IOTA 最初專注於作為物聯網（IoT）的骨幹。 IOTA 是一種無交易手續費且無需礦工處理交易的加密貨幣。然而，提交交易確實需要一些計算能力，這使其非常適合機器用作貨幣以及物聯網（IoT）的分散式通訊協議。IOTA 的主要目的是解決區塊鏈技術的一些主要問題，其中最關鍵的是區塊鏈越大（例如比特幣），實際轉移資金就越慢、越昂貴，也越受限。區塊鏈的另一個問題是大小：隨著區塊不斷增加，區塊鏈越來越長，能夠挖礦的電腦數量也越來越少。目前 BTC 已超過 150GB，ETH 也是如此。如果這個大小增加十倍，能夠挖礦的電腦將寥寥無幾，導致它們相對中心化（前兩大比特幣礦池擁有約 56% 的算力）。
