Em 23 de maio de 2011, um usuário do Something Awful brincou: "Alguém já os chamou de buttcoins?". Era imaturo e perfeito. Em semanas, a piada se transformou no Buttcoin.org, um blog de sátira que descrevia uma economia de "peer to peer butt" enquanto catalogava desastres de mineração, explosões de exchanges e "inovações" próximas a MLM.
