2011년, '암호화폐 트위터', NFT, VC 지원 체인이 존재하기 훨씬 전에 BitcoinTalk 포럼 사용자들은 새로운 통화를 생각해 냈습니다. 네트워크를 런칭하기 위해서가 아니라 btc를 조롱하기 위해서였죠... 그리고 이렇게 첫 번째 밈코인/밈통화가 탄생했습니다. 2011년 5월 23일, Something Awful의 한 포스터가 "아직 아무도 buttcoins이라고 부르지 않았나요?"라고 농담을 던졌습니다. 그것은 유치하면서도 완벽했습니다. 몇 주 안에 그 농담은 Buttcoin.org라는 패러디 블로그로 전이되었고, 그 블로그는 '피어 투 피어 엉덩이' 경제를 설명하면서 채굴 실패, 거래소 폭발, MLM에 가까운 '혁신'들을 기록했습니다.
