IOTAはモノのインターネット（IoT）向けの分散型台帳です。手数料なしのマイクロトランザクションと安全なデータ転送を実現する最初の台帳です。量子耐性があります。IOTAはブロックチェーンを使用しない画期的な新しいオープンソースの分散型台帳です。その革新的な量子耐性プロトコル「Tangle」は、ゼロ手数料、無限のスケーラビリティ、高速トランザクション、安全なデータ転送など、独自の新機能を生み出します。IOTAは当初、モノのインターネット（IoT）のバックボーンとして機能することに焦点を当てています。 IOTAは取引手数料がなく、取引処理にマイナーを必要としない暗号通貨です。ただし、トランザクションを送信するにはある程度の計算能力が必要であり、機械が通貨およびモノのインターネット（IoT）向けの分散型通信プロトコルとして使用するのに最適です。IOTAの主な目的は、ブロックチェーン技術の主要な問題のいくつかを解決することです。その主な問題は、ブロックチェーン（ビットコインなど）が大きくなるほど、実際に資金を転送するのが遅く、高コストになり、制限も多くなることです。ブロックチェーンのもう1つの問題はサイズです。ブロックが追加されるにつれてブロックチェーンは長くなり、マイニングできるコンピューターの台数が減少します。現在、BTCは150GB以上、ETHも同様のサイズです。このサイズが10倍に増加すると、マイニングできるコンピューターはごくわずかになり、比較的中央集権化されます（上位2つのビットコインマイニングプールがハッシュパワーの約56％を占めています）。
