Allá por 2011, mucho antes de que existieran el 'crypto Twitter', los NFT o las cadenas respaldadas por capital de riesgo, los usuarios del foro BitcoinTalk crearon una nueva moneda, no para lanzar una red, sino para burlarse de btc... y así nació la primera memecoin/memecurrency. El 23 de mayo de 2011, un usuario de Something Awful bromeó diciendo: '¿Alguien los ha llamado buttcoins todavía?'. Era inmaduro y perfecto. En cuestión de semanas, la broma se convirtió en Buttcoin.org, un blog de parodia que describía una economía 'peer to peer butt' mientras catalogaba desastres de minería, explosiones de intercambios e 'innovaciones' relacionadas con esquemas multinivel.
